Meet Pipsqueak, a Southern three-banded armadillo, born March 25, 2023. It’s (no sex yet) part of the Cincinnati Zoo Babies month, Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, sponsored by General Electric Credit Union. Parents are Lil and Titan. Eventually Pip, as the handlers call it, will join the parents for educational outings. These armadillos can completely roll themselves into a ball when threatened by predators. Look for Pip in the Animal Ambassador Center.

The gestation period for these armadillos is around four months. They only have one baby who will nurse for a couple months. Fennessy and Theo (not sure which ones which) are Masai giraffes that are part of Cincinnati Zoo Babies month, sponsored by General Electric Credit at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Thursday, May 4, 2023. Fennessy was born June 17, 2019 and Theo, November 23, 2019. You can find the giraffes at Giraffe Ridge. Check the zoo’s website for feeding times. Giraffes can weigh over 4,000 lbs! Their tongue can be a foot-and-a-half and their heart can weigh up to 25 lbs. Human hearts are less than a pound. These giraffes are a species at Risk.

The orchid mantis looks like a delicate flower, not an insect. Females are larger than males and live longer, about eight months. They are from Southeast Asia.

There are three manatees, Piccolino, 1 1/2, weighing 575 lbs, Calliope, 2, weighing 635 lbs. and Soleil, 1 1/2 weighing 730 lbs! The manatees were rescued as orphans and arrived here in November. The three consume 284 lbs. of romaine, endive, green leaf, kale, Napa cabbage and bok choy daily.

No sex determination yet. Some people compare them to dragons, but they’ll only get to 6-8 inches in length. When threatened, they’ll bite their tail and curl up in a ball to protect their soft underbelly. They live in scrubland and rocky areas and can live up to 25 years. Keep that in mind if you’re thinking this little guy could be a good pet.

Gila monsters are one of the few lizards that are venomous, which they use more for defense than subduing prey. Zoo keepers said the venom won’t kill you, but it will make you regret touching them for a week. They love to be hidden in the rocks. They can flatten their bodies to squeeze between rocks.
